The Company
In 1968, the term "ICF" (Insulated Concrete Form) was not yet in existence. That was the year a group of engineers endeavored to design a building system that would offer simplicity in use, quality and strength, and be available at an affordable cost. Initially, large panels of polystyrene were used as raw material, with diagonal and vertical holes cut out and filled with concrete once the panels were set in place. Thus, one of the very first ICF-built homes was presumably born.
It was a beginning – but the disadvantages of using polystyrene as a wall surface and a base, to which plastered had to be applied, were obvious. Consequently, new ideas were sought and found, not only for better materials but also for enhanced shapes and sizes. At that time, BASF, a German-based company, was experimenting with a mixture of polystyrene beads and cement. However, an economic use for this material could not be found. Eventually, this idea was picked up and adapted, and a similar mix was used for new building elements. In 1972, the basic RASTRA® element was leaving a barn-type operation in the mountains of Austria to become part of the first RASTRA® home.
Years of further development, testing, engineering, designing, expanding application, and industrializing of the production process followed. The end result was the achievement of a state-of-the-art product, which is the RASTRA® of today.
Development, research and practical testing continue today. An engineering staff with outstanding experience undertakes such efforts in order to guarantee RASTRA®’s position as the top building product.
RASTRA FOUND is a holding company located at P.O. Box 154, Vaduz, Liechtenstein. It was initially founded in Switzerland in 1972 and is holder of all intellectual property rights and worldwide licensing rights for the RASTRA® product.
